This is thirteen years old.

This is me (Hieu Tran) at twelve years old.

What would it take?

What kind of terrible circumstances would have to happen for you to send your twelve year old–son or daughter–alone, to a foreign country where s/he did not speak the language, did not understand the culture, and did not know anyone who lived there?

What would it take for you to send your child, alone, on a trip which eventually would claim approximately 440,000 lives? On a trip where your child could be captured by pirates and sold on the black market? Where your child could die of starvation or thirst? Where your child could drown?

What would it take to entrust your child to the hope that complete strangers, who most of your countrymen see as an evil enemy, would take your child in and see that your child is cared for?

What would it take?
